The story of new AWS CEO Matt Garman

“I am more optimistic than ever about the potential and growth ahead and believe these changes will put us in the best position for long-term success,” said Matt Garman, AWS’s new CEO.

Matt Garman, an 18-year AWS veteran who currently serves

as senior vice president of sales, marketing and global

services, will take over on June 13.

"I've had the privilege of being involved in many different

aspects of the AWS business over the past 18 years, but one

thing that has remained constant is the world-class talent and

unwavering obsession with customers of the people I work

with," Garman said in a statement. "I'm more optimistic than

ever about the innovation and growth potential ahead, and I

look forward to helping us move faster, invent more, and

serve our customers as a team."

Matt Garman, 48, joined Amazon in 2006 when AWS was

founded.

Garman graduated from Stanford University in 1998 with

a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and a master's

degree in engineering the following year. In 2004, he entered

the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern

University and received an MBA.

In the summer of 2005, Garman officially joined Amazon

as an MBA intern and joined the company full-time in 2006

as one of the first AWS product managers. His first position

was as the lead product manager for Amazon EC2 software

development.

In just three years, Garman was promoted to director and

general manager of Amazon EC2, and from 2013 to 2020,

Garman served as vice president of AWS computing services.

"Initially, Matt led the charge across AWS, helping us create

our first service level agreement, define new features, and

develop new pricing plans," Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in

a statement. "He then became our first product manager for

EC2 and led product management during its early, formative

years. During this time, he also led the team that defined,

launched, and operates EBS [Amazon Elastic Block Store]."

"I'm more optimistic than ever about our future innovation

and growth potential, and I look forward to helping us grow

faster, invent more, and operate as a team to help our

customers," said Matt Garman.

In his first statement since the announcement of his new CEO

role, Matt Garman said the company he has worked for the

past 18 years is more than just a business.

"AWS is more than a business to me. We are a team of

passionate missionaries dedicated to helping customers

improve their daily lives and businesses."

I look forward to helping us move faster, invent more, and serve our customers as a team.
